As part of the National Bail Out campaign to #FreeBlackMamas, Essie Justice Group, Alameda and San Francisco Public Defender’s Offices, Dignity and Power Now, Young Women’s Freedom Center, advocates, mothers and children gathered in Oakland and Los Angeles this week to call for an end to the predatory bail system that keeps so many women of color behind bars. Think Progress and Post News Group highlight the efforts to raise funds in time for Mother’s Day to reunite mothers with their loved ones.

In Case You Missed It
Members of the LA County’s Juvenile Justice Coordinating Council (JJCC) voted to put forward a new budget plan to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, outlining how funds initially intended for probation services in Los Angeles can be redirected to community based youth development programs and opportunities. Last week, the Board of Supervisors voted to allocate tens of millions in additional dollars to fund youth development services in Los Angeles County, redirecting critical funds from punishment to prevention thanks to community leaders.

On Thursday, May 16, Young Women’s Freedom Center is gathering community members, young people and advocates to share their testimony at public comment to show support for the shutdown of San Franciso’s Juvenile Hall by 2021.
