In September 2020, Solidaire launched the Janisha R. Gabriel Movement Protection Fund in direct response to listening to movement partners talk about their urgent and immediate needs resulting from the U.S. political climate in 2020. As of March 31, 2021, Solidaire moved over $3 million to 86 grantees through the Movement Protection Fund and this week released results and lessons learned from the grantmaking process, as well as highlights from the fund’s accomplishments. Last month, hundreds of funders, advocates and community leaders came together for “Investing in Black Organizers on the Front Lines”, a virtual event hosted by the California Black Freedom Fund to celebrate the fund’s latest grantmaking round, with which they invested nearly $9 million in 74 Black-led groups to support Black power-building across the state.
